History of the school

St. Peter's Interparish School was founded in 1866 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, and continued under their direction until 1986. Their legacy of providing quality Catholic education continues to the present day by a committed team of lay educators, making St. Peter's Interparish School one of the oldest continuing Catholic elementary schools in Washington, D.C.

Though the majority of the school population is drawn from four Catholic churches in the Capitol Hill area St. Peter, St. Joseph's of Capitol Hill, St. Dominic and St. Vincent De Paul — the school accepts children from neighboring parishes as well as non-Catholics desiring a caring environment for their children.

Serving four Catholic, urban parishes, St. Peter's Interparish School seeks to provide the foundation for the spiritual and educational development of a racially, socially, and economically diverse student population. Our example and instruction foster acceptance and respect for one another.

Students have the opportunity to realize their self-worth through an active approach to problem solving, clarity and order in creative presentation, and pride in finished work. St. Peter's Interparish School encourages cooperation among parents, students, teachers, and pastors in order to nurture the individual development of the whole child.   (more about our philosophy)

The religious program strives to build a faith that becomes living, conscious, and active through the light of daily instruction and participating in prayer and worship, as well as through the development of the community within and service to the local community. The Parish Director of Religious Education aids in the ongoing development of the children's Christian formation.

Students have performed above the national average on standardized achievement tests, as well as above the average for D.C. parochial schools. Graduates of St. Peter's Interparish School have set a tradition of being accepted into high schools of their choice.

The curriculum includes a strong emphasis on academics as well as the utilization of advanced materials at each level. The school recognizes and provides for individual differences.

The curriculum also includes art, music, physical education, science, language, computer, and library skills.

As part of our grant from the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation and DC Children and Youth Investment Trust, classes at St. Peter's explore the river in weekly hands-on experiences every Thursday at the neighboring Anacostia River and its St. Peter's students learn about the Anacostia Riversurrounding wetlands.

Hands-on computer learning is available. Grades One through Eight have access to an experimental science lab. The library's extensive collection of children's literature is known for its exceptional quality.  Spanish if offers to all grades, PreK through 8.  Children also can participate in band, basketball, chorus, classroom newspapers, yearbook, and a variety of community service projects.
